GAME OF THE DAY

The last two weeks have been a struggle for the Ponaganset baseball team, but its last game during spring vacation week might be want it needed to jump-start its season.

Joe Clarkwas dealing against Johnston on Thursday, but just when it looked like momentum had shifted toward the Panthers’ dugout, the Chieftains stole it right back. They manufactured a pair of runs to take the lead back in the fifth and added plenty of insurance in the sixth before Clark came out and finished off his complete game in Ponaganset’s 7-2 win over Johnston.

“My boys always back me up. They’ve got me on defense, got me on offense so I feel real confident when I’m out there on the mound doing my thing,” Clark said. “I trust my boys on offense to lead the way, so I feel real good.”

The players shined as bright as the sun did Thursday. Here's what happened in high school sports (1)

For four innings the game was a pitchers’ duel between Clark and Johnston’sEthan Bracey, with Ponaganset leading 1-0 after taking advantage of an error that let Altieri reach and later scoring on a wild pitch.

The Panthers rallied in the fifth, loading the bases with one out. Clark came up with a strikeout and looked like he would escape unscathed, but the slow-roller offMatt Clements’bat was too slow and allowedEmmanuel Riosto score the tying run. Clark got a ground out to end the half inning, but Johnston had a newfound energy coming out for the bottom half of the fifth.

Ponaganset quickly took it back.Ben McFeeandCooper St. Ongewere hit by pitches to open the bottom half, moved up on a wild pitch before pinch-hitterPatrick Ferns hit a ball that found space in left field to bring home McFee.

Jordan Lewisfollowed with a hit very similar to Clements, a slow roller off the end of the bat that traveled maybe 15 feet, allowing him to get to first safely and McFee to come home for a 3-1 lead.

“I’ve got my coach saying ‘you gotta get here, you gotta get here,’” Lewis said. “It’s just like you’re running from the cops. You can’t be short.”

Clark breezed through the sixth and the Chieftains gave him plenty of support in the sixth. St. Onge hit an RBI double and later scored on an error, Small drove home a run with a sacrifice fly and Ferns scored on a wild pitch that made in 7-1.

Johnston tried to rally in the seventh, but Clark remained focus on getting outs more than worrying about baserunners. The Panthers put another on the board with a ground-out byAiden Neil thatscoredGiovanni Celani, but Clark induced a ground-ball out to the next batter to end the game.

St. Onge was the leader on offense, going 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Five Chieftains had RBIs in the game and six different players scored. Clark threw a complete game, spreading out nine hits over the seven innings, giving up two earned runs while striking out four.

Neil led the Panthers with two hits and drove in a run. Bracey took the loss but struck out eight in his 5 1/3 inning of work.

After opening the season with a win over Chariho, Ponaganset (3-4) had lost four of its last five games heading into Thursday. The game was the Chieftains’ last for the week and they’ll look for a second straight on Monday when they host St. Raphael.

Johnston falls to 0-5 in Division II and will look for its first win Monday when it travels to take on Chariho.
